Position Overview


Under the leadership of the Registered Nurse, Licensed Practical Nurse or Registered Psychiatric Nurse, the Health Care Aide (HCA) supports residents/patients with Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) as outlined in the care plan. The HCA follows a full scope of practice, maintains competency through education and certification, and delivers person‑centered care in accordance with Accreditation Canada Standards, Personal Care Home Standards and applicable legislation.


Responsibilities


The incumbent prioritizes work, determines appropriate methods, and exercises independent judgment on unusual situations, while supporting the mission, vision, values and policies of Southern Health‑Santé Sud.


Experience



  • 1–2 years experience in a health care setting is preferred.

  • 1–2 years caring for elderly or disabled clients is preferred.


Education



  • Minimum Grade 12.

  • Health Care Aide Certificate from a recognized program.

  • Other combinations of education and experience may be considered.


Certification/Licensure



  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (Acute Care).


Qualifications and Skills



  • Knowledge of PHIA and FIPPA confidentiality and privacy requirements.

  • Knowledge of WHMIS, VPP and SCHIPP training and processes.

  • Ability to organize and prioritize workload.

  • Strong teamwork and communication skills.

  • Fluency in English; bilingual proficiency is essential for designated positions.

  • Ability to work in stressful environments, including with aggressive or agitated individuals.

  • Commitment to respect and promote cultural diversity.

  • Good work and attendance record.

  • Valid Class 5 driver’s licence and liability insurance $1 000 000 may be required for some program areas.


Physical Requirements



  • Ability to meet the physical and mental demands of the job.

  • Will work evenings, nights and weekends.
  • Travel to other regional facilities as required.
