The role requires a foundational understanding of anatomy, sterile procedures, and patient safety protocols for successful administration and disposal of sharps. Core Responsibilities Preparation: Gathering necessary supplies such as appropriate-sized needles, syringes, alcohol swabs, and a sharps container. Medication Preparation: Verifying the correct medication, checking expiration dates, and preparing the dose using sterile techniques. Patient Assessment: Confirming the patient's identity and consent, then positioning them comfortably and assessing the injection site for suitability. Site Selection: Identifying the correct injection site on large muscles (e.g., deltoid, gluteus, thigh) based on the medication, patient's age, muscle mass, and volume of the medication. Infection Control: Performing hand hygiene and cleaning the injection site with an alcohol swab using a circular motion to minimize the risk of infection. Injection Administration: Inserting the needle at a 90-degree angle into the muscle, injecting the medication slowly and steadily, and withdrawing the needle smoothly. Safety Procedures: Activating the needle's safety device to prevent accidental needlesticks and disposing of the used needle and syringe safely in a sharps container. Patient Monitoring: Monitoring the patient for any immediate adverse reactions and instructing them to remain in the facility for a designated observation period. Documentation: Documenting the administered medication, site, and any patient observations. Skills and Knowledge Required Clinical Skills: Proficient in performing IM injections using aseptic technique and various techniques like Z-tracking. Anatomical Knowledge: Understanding of the anatomical landmarks of IM injection sites to prevent injury. Patient Care: Ability to provide clear instructions, ensure patient comfort, and communicate effectively with patients and healthcare team members. Safety Awareness: Knowledge of safety protocols for handling sharps, waste disposal, and potential complications.
