Overview

Senior Security Platform Engineer Security (Akamai Security) at Sun Life. The role involves planning, designing, implementing, and monitoring security technologies and projects that support Sun Life’s security policies and procedures, with a focus on Sun Life’s corporate and production systems. Work with Enterprise Infrastructure, IT operations, Enterprise Architecture, and application development teams to identify risks and lead security solutions to protect customer and financial information.

What will you do?

• Analyze information systems utilizing cybersecurity techniques and lead security initiatives and enterprise-level projects, including POC/POV for new technologies.
• Work independently with ambiguity, deliver expected outcomes, and build trust with internal clients and peers.
• Deploy, support and maintain new and existing security technologies deployed within Sun Life, owned and supported by the team.
• Implement risk-driven security controls and provide SME support during audits.
• Investigate and respond to security incidents, adhere to SLAs, participate in 24x7 on-call support, and join major incident management calls as needed.
• Identify business risks and recommend strategies to address them.
• Manage capacity and resiliency of security systems protecting Sun Life’s internal and client data.
• Collaborate with security peers, vendors, and other Sun Life teams to enhance security posture and best practices.
• Act as a catalyst for digital transformation, using JIRA, Confluence, estimating stories, defining done, and tracking updates.
• Transition and operationalize projects and products, including RACI definitions, product documentation, and educating BAU teams.
• Document, update, and maintain cyber security playbooks, policies, and knowledge base articles used to support incident management and CSIRT processes.
• Continuously improve operational and security platform processes.

What you need to succeed

• An Information Technology university degree/college diploma in a related discipline or equivalent work experience.
• Minimum 5-7 years of information security and engineering experience with enterprise-level security technologies (perimeter, endpoints, crypto, cloud, email security, security visibility, automation and orchestration).
• Minimum 3 years of experience leading global information security projects.
• Preferred: Certifications such as CCNP/CCNP-Security, CCSP, CISSP, GIAC, CompTIA, or equivalent security certification.
• Experience in managing 3rd party security service providers.
• Broad exposure to multiple security disciplines, with strong incident response or detection engineering background.
• Knowledge of security controls and risk management frameworks (NIST and ISO 2700x).
• Experience with endpoint detection and response, intrusion detection, certificate management, email security, and web content filtering.
• Experience designing secure networks and endpoint systems; experience in policy development and system administration across multiple platforms (Windows and Linux).
• Experience deploying enterprise-level technology via Scrum and Kanban; knowledge of networking, firewalls, WAFs, and IDS/IPS; knowledge of AWS and disaster recovery methodologies.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills to explain security issues to peers and management.

Required skills

• Security Content Platform Leadership: SME for Akamai security products (WAF, Kona Site Defender, Bot Manager, Prolexic DDoS protection).
• Architect and Optimize: Design scalable, secure web app architectures using Akamai security solutions; tune configurations for security and performance.
• Threat Detection & Response: Monitor and mitigate real-time threats; develop response playbooks and automated remediation.
• Custom Rule Development: Develop and tune custom rules for Akamai WAF to balance security and performance.
• Security Automation: Lead automation of security processes and policy management (e.g., Python, Bash); automation for security updates.
• Cross-Functional Collaboration: Liaise between security, DevOps, application development, and infrastructure teams.
• Mentorship & Leadership: Guide junior engineers and security team members; promote best practices in security operations.
• Incident Management & Forensics: Lead post-incident investigations and remediation actions.
• Reporting & Compliance: Ensure compliance (PCI-DSS, GDPR); prepare security metrics and reports for senior leadership.
• Continuous Improvement: Stay current on threats and Akamai product advancements; recommend improvements to security architectures.
• Project Leadership: Lead security projects, migrations, upgrades, and adoption of new Akamai features; ensure timely, secure delivery.
