There is a reason why Whitehorse has seen steady growth in population – it\'s because it truly is a wonderful place to live, work, and play.</p><p>To learn more about Whitehorse, please visit our website at whitehorse.ca/</p><h3>About the Opportunity</h3><p>We currently have exciting opportunities for <b>two full-time Supervisors, Building Officials</b> based in <b>Whitehorse, Yukon</b>.</p><p>Reporting to the Manager, Land & Building Services, you will be the City’s top building officials, leading a small team of junior inspectors while providing supervisory oversight for the effective and efficient delivery of building and plumbing inspection services. This role is key to ensuring compliance with codes and bylaws, supporting contractors and consultants, and guiding the City through a period of departmental transition and stronger code enforcement.</p><p>More specifically, your responsibilities include but are not limited to:</p><ul><li>Leading and supervising a small team of Building Officials, including recruitment, training, scheduling, and performance management</li><li>Reviewing and approving building and plumbing permit applications for compliance with applicable codes, bylaws, and standards</li><li>Providing technical guidance and interpretation to contractors, consultants, and applicants on required design changes</li><li>Issuing permits, occupancy approvals, and enforcement notices such as Stop Work Orders and Notices of Violation</li><li>Conducting site visits and inspections to ensure safety and compliance, specifying corrective actions where required</li><li>Investigating and resolving complaints and infractions related to construction</li><li>Acting as the City’s expert resource on the National Building Code, National Plumbing Code, and other applicable bylaws and standards</li><li>Leading departmental projects focused on process improvement, permitting modernization, and policy/bylaw updates</li><li>Preparing reports and statistics for senior management and elected officials</li><li>Monitoring operating and capital budgets under the direction of the Manager</li><li>Responding to public, contractor, consultant, and agency inquiries to support timely and efficient service delivery</li><li>Acting as Manager, Land & Building Services when assigned</li></ul><h3>More About You</h3><p>To qualify, you will need a <b>Journeyman Certificate in Carpentry or Plumbing (or equivalent experience)</b> and a <b>Level II or III Building Officials Association of British Columbia (BOABC) Certification</b> (or Canadian/Provincial equivalent, with a commitment to obtaining Level III within 12 months). A minimum of <b>10 years’ experience in construction, including at least 2 years in a supervisory role</b>, will also be essential. A valid Class 5 driver\'s license is required.</p><p>Additionally, the following skills and background will be highly valued:</p><ul><li>Certification as a Registered Building Official (RBO)</li><li>Strong knowledge of the National Building Code, National Plumbing Code, National Energy Code, National Fire Code, and related bylaws and standards</li><li>Valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence</li><li>Standard First Aid/CPR and conflict resolution training (or ability to obtain within 1 year)</li></ul><p>As our ideal candidate, you will possess excellent decision-making, communication, and supervisory skills, with the ability to function effectively and independently in a regulatory environment.
